About the Legal Assistants Division |

"...Soon after the 1982 seminar, the NCPA was contacted by Katie Thorpe, Executive Director of the Academy, with respect to the formation of a division in the NCATL. An invitation was extended to attend the April 29, 1983, meeting of the Board of Governors (BOG) to be held in Pinehurst. Alice Penny (NCPA Chair), Joan Dressler (NCPA President), and Pat McElroy (NCPA liaison to NCATL) attended that now famous meeting and made a presentation of proposals and answered questions. After discussion (while we held our breath) the BOG voted to support the concept of an auxiliary for associate members by recommending to the general membership 1) that a new category of membership designated Paralegal Affiliate Members be created and 2) that a Legal Assistants Committee be formed by making a change in the Constitution and By-Laws of the Academy. The BOG further declared that benefits "will include continuing legal education, manuscripts, listing in the membership directory, access to the cassette library and Trial Briefs; members will not be entitled to vote or hold office." By September, 1983 Article III, Section B of the Constitution and By-Laws was amended by adding a new category for "Paralegal Affiliate Members." Academy President James R. Van Camp sent out the first welcoming letters in September, 1983, and included an invitation to "work on the Legal Assistant’s committee.""

CALLING ALL LAD MEMBERS! WE NEED YOUR INPUT! The Legal Assistants Division Leadership is considering a few changes…

At the April 24, 2008 Executive Committee meeting of the Legal Assistants Division, the officers discussed and approved three proposals that would require an amendment to the Academy By-Laws & Constitution.
Currently, under Article III, Membership, subsection B. Categories of Membership, the provision of the Academy Constitution states…
“(10) Legal Assistant Members – Paralegals and legal assistants:
(a) who are employed and sponsored by a member in good standing of the Academy; and
(b) who have successfully completed a curriculum of training as a legal assistant; or, whose attorney/employer attests that such a person is qualified by training or experience as a legal assistant.
Legal Assistant members will not be entitled to vote or hold office in the Academy.”
(1) PROPOSAL: Amend the provision to change “sponsorship” to “verification” for new Division members.
(2) PROPOSAL: Amend the provision to remove the sentence “Legal Assistant members will not be entitled to vote or hold office in the Academy.”
The amended provision of the Constitution would state…
“(10) Legal Assistant Members – Paralegals and legal assistants:
(a) who are employed and verified by a member in good standing of the Academy; and
(b) who have successfully completed a curriculum of training as a legal assistant; or, whose attorney/employer attests that such a person is qualified by training or experience as a legal assistant."
And, lastly,
(3) PROPOSAL: Division Name Change
The LAD Executive Committee is exploring the possibility of changing the Division name from “Legal Assistants Division” to “Paralegal Division,” “Paralegal/Legal Assistants Division” or “Legal Assistants/Paralegal Division.”
